Tarkwa Miner Jailed for 5 Years Over Theft of Mining Equipment
The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced an 18-year-old small-scale miner, Mohammed Razak, to 5 years imprisonment with hard labor for stealing mining equipment worth GHC13,400.00.
Razak pleaded guilty to the offense and begged for forgiveness. According to Superintendent of Police Juliana Essel-Dadzie, the complainant, a fellow small-scale miner, had dismantled his equipment due to a water shortage and stored it on-site. However, when he returned the next day, he discovered that several items, including crushers, routers, a pump machine, shovels, and a woollen blanket, were missing.
The complainant conducted his own investigation, leading to Razak’s arrest and confession. Razak claimed he sold the equipment to a scrap dealer in the Wassa Adiembra community, but the dealer was nowhere to be found.
The court, presided over by Hathia Ama Manu, handed down the sentence, marking a stern warning against theft in the small-scale mining community.
