Kofi Donkor Urges Boomplay to Settle Celestine’s Overdue Royalties Amid Rumors of Ghana Office Closure
Kofi Donkor, manager and husband of celebrated gospel musician Celestine Donkor, has expressed grave concerns regarding the non-payment of his wife’s royalties by popular music streaming platform, Boomplay. ording to Mr. Donkor, Celestine has been denied her rightful royalties for over a year, prompting him to take decisive action.
In a fervent Facebook post, Mr. Donkor implored Boomplay to settle the outstanding payments before the purported closure of its Ghana office. “Boomplay, pay us our royalties before you shut down the Ghana office on Friday!” he exclaimed, conveying his frustration over the prolonged delay.
In an interview Mr. Donkor elaborated on the severity of the situation, stating, “Boomplay has failed to make payments for over a year, and with rumors of their Ghana office closure, it’s imperative we retrieve our funds immediately.”
The impending closure of Boomplay’s Ghana office has exacerbated tensions, as the company’s rumored exit has created urgency for the settlement of outstanding debts. Notably, Boomplay’s business model involves partnerships with distribution platforms rather than direct contracts with artists.
The delayed payments to Celestine and other prominent Ghanaian artists, including Kofi Sarpong, Okyeame Kwame, Tinny, King Paluta, and Sista Afia, have raised eyebrows within the industry. The issue appears to stem from challenges with distributors, including expired licensing agreements and difficulties in establishing new ones.
This development highlights the pervasive concerns within Ghana’s music industry, where artists consistently face difficulties receiving payments for their work on digital platforms like Boomplay. Undeterred, Donkor remains resolute in his demand for the payment owed to Celestine, emphasizing the need for a prompt resolution.
The situation underscores the necessity for streamlined royalty payment systems, greater transparency, and more effective collaborations between music streaming platforms and artists to ensure fair compensation for creative work.
