Kasoa: Five Dead, 30 Hospitalized from Cholera Outbreak

A cholera outbreak in Kasoa has claimed five lives, with 30 others currently receiving treatment at the Kasoa Polyclinic and Mother and Child Hospital . The Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, Anita Love Obo Amissah, confirmed the tragic toll, stating that three people succumbed to the outbreak on Thursday, October 31, followed by two additional deaths on Friday afternoon.
The situation has sparked concern among local authorities, who are urging the community to take preventive measures to curb further spread. Madam Obo Amissah emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean environment, proper waste disposal, and food hygiene to prevent cholera . She specifically advised residents to:
– Maintain Clean Environments: Keep surroundings free from trash and filth
– Practice Proper Waste Disposal: Ensure waste is disposed of correctly
– Prioritize Food Hygiene: Ensure food is handled, stored, and consumed safely
Neighboring districts, including Awutu Senya West and Gomoa East, have transferred cases to Kasoa health facilities, prompting Madam Obo Amissah to urge these communities to contribute to controlling the outbreak.
The MCE commended health authorities for their swift response and efforts to control and treat cases. She advised residents to seek early medical attention upon sensing symptoms to prevent further escalation .
In her words, “Five people have been confirmed dead after the outbreak. What I want to ask from the people of Kasoa is to take good care of themselves by eating healthy food” . With the hospital recalling staff on leave to assist, Madam Obo Amissah remains optimistic about managing the situation.
