Renowned Ghanaian highlife artiste Ofori Amponsah has shared his inspiring journey to stardom, revealing how legendary musician Daddy Lumba played a pivotal role in his success.

The Breakthrough

In an interview on the Day Show with Berla Mundi, Ofori Amponsah recalled his relentless search for a producer to pitch his songs. One fateful day in Lapaz, after school, he met a CD seller who informed him about Daddy Lumba’s quest for fresh talent.

A Life-Changing Meeting

Two days later, Ofori Amponsah met Daddy Lumba, who listened to his songs and presented him with GHC5,000 in a brown envelope – a substantial sum in 1993.

“Daddy Lumba said, ‘You are a star’ after listening to my songs,” Ofori Amponsah fondly remembered.

Challenges and Perseverance

Although this encounter seemed like a breakthrough, Ofori Amponsah faced another five-year wait before releasing his music. Daddy Lumba temporarily gave up on production, and Ofori Amponsah was sidelined.

“I was sacked from school for pursuing music, and I spent four years on the streets,” he shared.

Despite the setbacks, Ofori Amponsah’s big break finally came. His debut song with Daddy Lumba, “Anti Atta,” marked the beginning of his successful music career.

Ofori Amponsah’s first album, “Asew,” followed, cementing his status as a highlife sensation.

A Lasting Legacy

Ofori Amponsah’s story serves as a testament to perseverance and the impact of mentorship in the music industry. His encounter with Daddy Lumba not only changed his life but also contributed to Ghana’s rich musical heritage.
