Come To Our Rescue: Mepe Development Association Appeals To The Government And NGO’s

The Mepe Development Association (MDA) is urgently appealing to the government and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to assist individuals and families impacted by floods resulting from the spillage of excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams by the Volta River Authority (VRA).

Mr. Fabian Kojo Mawulenu, Chairman of the MDA, made this plea in an interview with Class News’ Elaine Attoh.

He highlighted that the owners of Mosito Hotel have already provided some households with foodstuffs to help those in need.

However, amidst this tragic event, there has been a negative development where canoe operators have significantly increased their fares, escalating from GHS 2 to GHS 10.

The decision to spill excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams was made to prevent potential collapses and safeguard the infrastructure. Unfortunately, this action has led to flooding in various communities within the Volta Region, impacting people’s lives and livelihoods.

This flooding is reminiscent of the devastating effects of the initial flooding disaster that occurred following the construction of the Akosombo Dam in 1965.

Mr. Mawulenu also expressed deep concern regarding the health implications of the floods on the affected communities.

He underscored that the flooding has resulted in thousands of residents being rendered homeless, and it poses a serious health risk.

Sewage waste he stated has contaminated the water surfaces, and debris is freely flowing on top of the waters, exacerbating the situation.

Immediate assistance and support he said are crucial to address the needs and health risks faced by the affected population.

Meanwhile, officers from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are on the ground helping with rescue efforts.
